t
was cool and windy out at the Point Bar and Grille. Beer
flowed from a keg and a dedicated group of members showed off their
culinary skills as a half dozen turkey fryers bubbled vigorously (it
was difficult at times to keep their propane burners lit in the
wind). I/P/C Bobby Rawls had a vat of boiling water spiked
with cayenne and other spices into which he periodically shoveled
ladles of squirming crawfish ("Louisiana Lobster" he
called them) After a decent interval, Bobby would scoop out
huge mounds of steaming hot, bright red crawfish whose tails made a
tasty snack. Many if not most of the crawfish never made it to
the buffet as the chefs killed time waiting for Tom Brady (12) and
his Patriots to take the field by cracking them open on the spot.
In another area, Roger Adams and Carl Shields rolled bits of conch
in flour and deep fried them to perfection. Carl explained
that the conch had been pounded flat and soaked in buttermilk for 24
hours before being floured. It is amazing, Carl noted, how
they swelled back out in the buttermilk. Members wandered out
to the cooking area and sampled fluffy pieces of hot fried conch as
they waited for Donovan McNabb and his Philadelphia Eagles to make
their entrance.
Dr. Paul Berman and Dr. Arch Gordon helped load the turkeys into and
out of the fryers, and carried the finished product out to the
slowly gathering crowd.
Debbie Washburn, who like most of the staff was wearing a Patriot
tee shirt (specifically, number 12) made it clear where her loyalty
lay as she fastened colored wristbands around our arms so we
wouldn't wander off and get lost.
As the game progressed, the biggest cheers were for the
commercials. Sir Paul McCartney got the attention of the crowd
at the Point Bar and when he launched his signature "Hey
Jude" everyone joined I at full voice. As the fourth quarter
drew to a close, the Eagles battled back to within 3 points, but
McNabb, failed to conserve time on the clock and left his team with
just seconds to get within field goal range. A final
interception by The Patriots' Harrison clinched the game for the New
England team. So ended Superbowl XXXIX up in Jacksonville.
