Tropical Storm Katrina hits the Coral Ridge Yacht Club
The eye of
Katrina made landfall about 6:30 p.m. Thursday near the county
line between Broward and Miami-Dade, moving southwest across
Miami-Dade and dumping up to 11½ inches of rain overnight.
V/C Sammarco, riding out the storm at his high-rise Adventura
condo reported that the eye passed right over him and he could
see the eyewall.
"Awesome," he reported.
The National Hurricane Center measured gusts up to 91 mph at the
southeast eyewall, while early reports had gusts reaching 92 mph
in Fort Lauderdale, 68 in Miami, 61 mph in Davie and 63 mph in
Miami Beach.
Electricity was still knocked out Friday to 648,300 homes in
Miami-Dade County, 468,900 in Broward and 17,700 in Palm Beach.
As of Friday afternoon CRYC was still without power.
Immediate Past Commodore, Bobby Rawls aboard his boat at the
Club snapped some pictures of the storm impact on the Club.
The largest damage came as the verandah's awning was lifted off,
pipes and all, and unceremoniously deposited in the south
parking lot. All the ceiling fans at the Point Bar and
Grille whirled themselves to smithereens and one of the TV sets
came loose. Some boats suffered damage to railings and
canvas.
