"revival" was the right term to use about this party. With
everyone expecting a slow summer and everyone going cruising, a
bright pulse of energy revived the Club and brought the people
out. Paul & Hedy Berman created a breakout party that kept
people dancing and grooving until late into the night. With
decorations that resembled an old High School Gym all dolled up
for a prom and a DJ with lights, music, games, prizes and a fog
machine, the old CRYC dining room resembled nothing less than a
discotheque.
People swarmed out of the woodwork, members and guests looking
for a good time. First, they entered the bar area and found a
real Philadelphian smorgasbord. We had Philly Cheese steaks,
Philly Fries, and pigs in the blanket. People talked, ate and
generally caroused with a Rock Concert Tour a la Woodstock on
the big screen. Everyone was so excited that they seemed
distracted when the Dick Clark American Bandstand theme filled
the air. As they walked into the ballroom they were assaulted by
great music, great decorations and a real exciting atmosphere.
I have never been in the Club for a party and seen this many
people swinging to the beat. Both young an old were stirred by
the pounding rhythms of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Everyone was
swinging and swaying to the beat and the dance floor was covered
with people. After occasional breaks for dinner, the party
really heated up. We had contests with hoola hoops, and everyone
got into the act. We had an Air Guitar contest that made you
wonder if these people ever had any inhibitions. There were
prizes for everyone: Rock & Roll CDs to commemorate their
participation and skill.
Then the DJ turned up the heat and the fog machine and two giant
conga lines formed up around the dancers and wormed their way
around the room. By now everyone was going and the place was
jumping in one of the best sleeper parties of the year. Dessert
was also in accordance with the American Bandstand era with ice
cream sodas and root beer floats for all.
I would, personally, like to thank Ruth and Ron Roman, Judy
Honorowski, and Kathryn and Gary Rudolph and all the others who
showed up and made this party a success. A special thank you
goes to Michael Sandbrook our Catering Director for going out of
his way to make this party a success. I hope this party can
become an annual affair on par with our other great parties so
that those who missed this chance will have an opportunity to
join us next time.
