The board of the Captains' Club cordially invites you to attend one or all of our upcoming weekly Tuesday lunch meetings.
Many, many, many high tides ago the CRYC Captains' Club was formed as a men's group to promote general seamanship and to discuss navigational issues on a monthly basis. However, throughout the years it has evolved into a weekly social gathering, featuring interesting talks on a wide array of subjects from many of South Florida's finest and most respected individuals and organizations. Many of our fine CRYC members attend each week for lunch, camaraderie, and to enjoy these great speakers and presentations. We invite you to do the same. Your first lunch is on us, so what do you have to lose?
Both in the crowd and behind the podium you'll be surrounded by some of the current and former Who's Who of various industries in South Florida and North America. Enjoy a great lunch buffet and speaker, make new CRYC friends, and you can be in and out within an hour or so. Why not put a visit to next Tuesday's Captains' Club on your schedule – see you
there!
Captains’ Club
Captain: George Thorne
First mate: John Muench
Purser: Brendon Barry
Asst. Purser: R/C Ralph McGrath
Immediate past Captain & Program Director: Gov. Mark Burnam
Bell Ringer: Dick Kaskel
Members
passing in the aisle while we are reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or
vocalizing God Bless America are requested to stop, stand at attention, and
render honors to the flag of the United States of America … Thank you.
On
March 9th we welcomed Dr. Andy Mencia of the Adult and geriatric
Institute of Florida, who discussed the role of the kidneys in keeping us
healthy.

On
March 16th Mrs. K. Alison Albury talked about “life on a Rock,”
the tiny Highborne Cay in the Bahamian out islands.
It
turns out that a number of our members had visited Highborne and had their
own stories to tell augmenting the chapters Ms. Albury read from her book.
The most amusing was Gov. Tom Jantz confronting an intruder in the dark
shining a light on his upraised pistol and exclaiming, “I’m from Detroit,
and I know how to use this.” Tom credits the “Detroit” line with scaring
off the intruder.

On March 23rd we welcomed Michael Mayo,
columnist for the Sun Sentinel who spoke about local politics “Mayo on the
Side.” Unfortunately he was loudly interrupted by a member who objected to
his point of view. Mr. Mayo pointed out that he was paid to express his
point of view as an editorial columnist and that, in any event, he was the
featured speaker this afternoon at the Captains’ Club. Program Chairman
Gov. Mark Burnam asked that the audience afford the speakers the respect
they are entitled to as invited guests.
On
March 30th, filling in for a no-show speaker, Larry Klairmont entertained
the captains
speaking about his extensive luxury car collection with great humor.

On April 6th Larry again entertained
us with stories of his real estate adventures, including one extended
negotiation with Bank of America in which he detailed his interaction with a
young wet-behind-the-ears executive who was full of himself. Larry just
walked away from the deal. Joe Cantu, noting that when his company, Merrill
Lynch, was acquired by Bank of America, he encountered similar attitudes,
and that’s why he’s formed his own company.

On April 13th, we were graced by a
presentation by Stacy Honowitz, from the Sex Crimes unit of the States
Attorney’s office. This is her 6th or 7th appearance
at the Captains’ Club where, as usual, she outraged many with her
description of pedophile abuse of children and the hurdles she must jump to
bring them to justice.

On April 27th, Vincent Promuto filled in for a missing speaker. Vinnie, as
he is known around the Club played with the Washington Redskins and in the
Pro Bowl in 1963 and 1964. He is a member of the Washington Redskins Ring of
Fame. Vinnie explained that he went back to school and got his law degree
and spoke of the spirit that infused his playing days and his post-football
career.
Shifting to his role as CRYC’s parliamentarian, Vinnie
Promuto cautioned Captains’ Club members to disbelieve the rumors floating
around the Club regarding costs and salaries and assessments. He urged
members to check with one of the commodores before passing on an overheard
rumor.
On May 4th, Michael Batchelder spoke about advances in
medical equipment and displayed various kinds of equipment from simple
suction cup hand holds to powered electric scooters.

On May 11th, the Hon. Cynthia Imperato, Broward Circuit Court Judge,
entertained the assembled captains with stories about cases and defendants
who have come before her in a number of celebrated cases. Some defendants
have threatened her and her family. She briefly sketched out her sentencing
philosophy and explained that some sentences were as a result of legal
mandates.

On May 18th, Cookie Williams and Joyce Oberlander
presented a slide show of their adventures during a three-week tour of
Cambodia and Siam which included encounters with artistic elephants and a
zip-line cross-country flight.
