The islands of
Hawaii got a little closer to the club on July 16th at the
Blue Hawaii Summer Fundraiser party hosted by the New Auxiliary Club and
chaired by Lynda Smith. The Venice of America room was turned into a
tropical Hawaiian setting with Polynesian floral table coverings, palm
trees, and traditional leis. A tropical gust of warm wind threatened the
party when the air conditioning went out but Governor Joe Volpe with
wrench in hand came to the rescue and fixed the problem just before the
guests began to arrive. As the partygoers began to arrive in their
flowered Hawaiian dress and hula skirts the room became even more
vibrant.
A special “Blue
Hawaii” cocktail was offered along with hors d’oeuvres that included
baby back ribs, coconut shrimp, and bacon wrapped scallops to name a
few. Keeping with the Hawaiian tradition dinner included a whole roasted
pig, Polynesian chicken kabobs, green beans with macadamia nuts, and a
carving station with pork tenderloin served with a warm pineapple sauce.
Pineapple up side down cake with a grand marnier sauce topped off the
meal. Thank you Chef Kevin.
The CRYC
Hawaiian Dance Troupe was the evening’s entertainment. Moku (Mort
Crockett) a native of Hawaii) introduced the dancers featuring Peki (Peg
Crockett) and the “Coconut Willies” that included Lopaka (Bob Hall),
Kini (Dean Jackson), Lona (Ron Roman), and Kana (Dan Rubens). Peki began
the show with two lovely hula dances followed by two memorable hula
dances by the “Coconut Willies” that were dressed in authentic grass
skirts and coconut tops. The show ended with the entire troupe
performing “Aloha”. Then the DJ “Izzy” turned up the beat and it was
time to dance and dance we did!
Thank you to all
that attended and supported the New Auxiliary Club annual summer
fundraiser. A special thanks to Peg for teaching the “Coconut Willies”
how to hula and to Michael, Bertram, Wisely, and Marta that helped
before, during, and after to make this party a success.
Aloha and Mahalo
