CRYC Hurricane Wilma Survivors

Pictures by Alexis Promuto Text by Lynda Smith

Wilma may have come through with a mighty force that none of us will soon forget, but because of the storm we also saw the members of CRYC come together to help each other out. Once the storm passed through, members came to the Club to check on the damages, and within hours they were picking up the broken patio furniture and gathering up anything that was salvageable and putting it back together. Small and large groups formed to share their homes, their food, and their network of workers to help clean and remove fallen trees and debris from their own front yards and patios.

As time went on and the Club remained closed, it became apparent that it was time to get as many members as possible together for a gathering at the Point Bar. With so many still without power this would not be an easy undertaking.  But keep in mind this is CRYC.

First task at hand was how to supply power to the Point Bar; but thanks to the boaters on the north dock and through the use of their boat generators, that problem was solved. Next on the list was food. Chef Kevin and his staff got to work and solved that one. Johnny and his staff took care of the Point Bar. Next was how do we get the word out with so many without power and phones? By word of mouth a human chain letter was started; calls were made, emails were sent in hopes that members would get the message … and it worked!

On Wednesday, November 2nd over 200 members gathered at the Point Bar for an evening together. There were families, singles, couples, Anc’Hers, Captains, Auxiliary members, and Cruisers all there for one reason, and that was to be together.  For some it was not an easy drive from such areas as Coral Springs and Plantation without traffic lights and many of the roads still difficult to travel on, but after more than an hour on the road for some, they made it.  We had cocktails, hamburgers, hot dogs, and steaks. We had so much fun we that we did it again on Friday night along with music by Carlos and Lynn.

It would be impossible to thank everyone that got together to make this happen but it’s the end result that matters and that is that we all enjoyed being together at the club.  The pictures are from Friday’s gathering (nobody remembered to bring a camera on Wednesday).
